Canadian Arts Coalition Welcomes New Canadian Heritage Minister

November 4, 2015 – The Canadian Arts Coalition congratulates Mélanie Joly, the newly sworn in Minister of Canadian Heritage, on her appointment to Cabinet.

Swearing-in of Mélanie JolyMs. Joly is known for her involvement in the cultural sector as a volunteer and philanthropist. Notably, she was awarded the Arnold Edinborough Award by Business for the Arts in 2010. “We are eager to begin working with the Minister Joly to fulfill the Liberal Party’s commitments to arts and culture in Canada.” says Kate Cornell, Co-chair of the Steering Committee of the Canadian Arts Coalition and Executive Director of the Canadian Dance Assembly.

During the election campaign, all parties affirmed the essential role of arts and culture to stimulate our economy and strengthen our Canadian identity. The parties heard the requests of the arts sector: they recognized the need to support the creation and appreciation of the arts through investments in the Canada Council for the Arts, and the need to promote arts and culture on the international stage. The Liberal Party put forward a cultural platform promising investments totaling $380 million. “The Coalition looks forward with optimism to working with the Minister to strengthen programs, policies, and investments to support the Canadian arts and culture sector – one that contributes $48 billion to our GDP.” Cornell noted.

The Canadian Arts Coalition is the largest group of artists, business leaders, and executives of the arts sector in the country. We all have the belief that increased investment in the arts, through the Canada Council for the Arts, is essential for the country’s future. We believe the exceptional Canadian quality of life depends on a vibrant and diverse arts community.
