November 30, 2018 – Are you ever done building audiences? Never. The same goes with arts advocacy.
On October 2nd, over 100 arts advocates from across Canada traveled to Parliament Hill to deliver the messages of the Canadian Arts Coalition and to encourage continued investment to our vibrant and creative sector. CAPACOA was proud to have played a lead role in organizing this successful Arts Day on the Hill.
And our advocacy efforts didn’t stop there. In the last weeks and months, we orchestrated a letter campaign that resulted in 10 Members of Parliament expressing their support for an increase to the Canada Arts Presentation Fund to the Minister of Canadian Heritage. We also met with two members of the Standing Committee on Finance and we ensured sector representation at pre-budget hearings. Randy Glynn, from Live Arts Dance, secured a rare meeting with the Minister of Finance. Finally, Gisèle Côté, from Aramusique, managed to meet met with the Minister of Canadian Heritage and the Bloc Québécois critic to discuss the role of the presenter, the diversity of presenting practices and where arts presentation fits in the big picture.
Arts and culture is part of our identity, they are our past, our present and our future. Great to see passionate people like Gisèle Côté and Frédéric Julien in Ottawa today. #cdnpoli pic.twitter.com/H6FBO7JJQD

Are we done yet? Never.
Arts advocacy is not unlike performing arts presentation: the moment the curtain falls on a show, you have to prepare for the next one. And you must keep building your audiences. Every day, week and month.
