June 21, 2017 – In the fall, Canada Council for the Arts will be accepting applications to the $88.5 million Fund for the Arts in Digital World. This will be a strategic fund, rather than a granting program. So, let’s strategize.
Here are some of the principles behind the Digital Fund, according to the announcement made in March:
- “The Council is allocating funds to this [digital] transition in the interests of sustainable development. Among other things, this means that artists and arts organizations will have real control over the implementation and outcomes of the initiatives being supported, that strategies will be user-focused, and that citizens will be the ultimate beneficiaries of new sustainable approaches.”
- “we would also like the initiatives submitted to demonstrate openness, in the sense that they integrate consensus, collaboration and networking – right from the design phase.”
- “This means sharing knowledge and outcomes of the funded initiatives widely, rather than fiercely protecting this information as exclusive property.”
Here is what’s on our mind
In a spirit of openness and of information sharing, CAPACOA is making a first step by disclosing draft plans for Phase 2 of the Digital Innovation Council for the Performing Arts. These are a series of potential digital projects identified over the course of Phase 1, Digitizing the Performing Arts: An Assessment of Opportunities, Issues and Challenges. Nothing in this document is anywhere close to implementation readiness, but we firmly believe that implementation readiness can only be the result of a collective desire to move together in the same direction.
