Radical Collaboration in a Linked Digital World
In an era of algorithms and highly personalized recommendations, anything that is unavailable as data is very unlikely to be found or recommended. Whereas other industries have long made their contents readily discoverable by machines, the live performance sector lags behind. Linked open data could enable performing arts organizations to catch up. Together. More details around this session to come. Silla and Rise
Silla and Rise blend Inuit throat-singing and futuristic dancefloor beats. Silla are Cynthia Pitsiulak (Kimmirut, NU) and Charlotte Qamaniq (Iglulik, NU) their name comes from the Inuktitut word “Sila” meaning weather. Sila is what surrounds us; it is what connects us to our land, to the moon, sun and stars, the ocean and the air we breathe. In respecting and honouring the need to preserve Inuit culture and paying homage to our land and the strong connection to its spirituality, they experience and perform the sounds of traditional and contemporary throat songs. Rise is Ottawa’s Rise Ashen, a Juno Award nominated global-grooves producer, DJ and dancer who has spent his life pursuing the intersection of traditional and futuristic music. Making Artistic Cents:Communication Conundrum – Identifying the how, what, why, when, where of connecting with our colleagues.
In our ever-changing performing arts field, we are constantly questioning how to make effective contact and efficiently communicate with each other whether it be agent/manager, presenter, artist or service organization. This interactive session will focus on an authentic and inclusive dialogue with one another i.e. initiating contact, negotiating contracts, pre-engagement planning, post engagement follow-up or seeking concrete information. Designated presenters, agents and artists will share brief comments regarding modes of communication, establishing and respecting timelines and boundaries, hearing a “yes” or “no” and what encourages a spirit of discovery. Facilitated break-out sessions will follow in an interactive discussion. |

Wikidata: a do-it-yourself and do-it-together way of making Canadian artists stand out in the digital world
Tired of dealing with dozens of platform to populate or search for information on artists? We’ll we ain’t gonna lie to you: the era of scattered and siloed information isn’t quite over. Yet. Imagine an open knowledge base that could be read and edited by anyone, and that could be linked to many, many other platforms? This knowledge base exists. It’s called Wikidata. It’s free. And it needs information about Canadian artists. This workshop will offer an introduction to Wikidata and other Wikimedia collaborative platforms, as well as step by step instructions for editing information in Wikidata. The workshop is designed primarily for artists, agents and managers, but it will also be valuable to anyone with a keen interest in digital discoverability. Stacey Allison-Cassin Stacy Allison-Cassin is a Digital Pedagogy Librarian in the Student Learning and Academic Success Department at York University. Video Phase is the result of the collaboration between two musicians – creators,Julien Robert and Julien Compagne. Their common idea is to develop a new kind of art that equally combines music, video, and technology.Strongly influenced by Steve Reich’s music (the inspiration of their first show) but alsoby electronic music, they create a synesthesia between their musical and visual universes, one representing the other and vice versa. The visual component of theirshows is totally interactive; this gives them the freedom to improvise and preserves themagic of live performance. With the use of technology, they seek to provide theaudience with more than a regular concert – a real multi-sensory experience. Contact:Eoin Ó Catháin Since forming in 2010, the Toronto-based vocal band, Countermeasure, has earned standing ovations and critical acclaim worldwide.
