Which SOCAN tariff should apply to dance performances and recitals?
CAPACOA and Canadian Dance Assembly are partnering to host a town-hall discussion and vote to decide the future of SOCAN’s tariff policy on dance performance, with an introduction from Karla Etienne and background from Frédéric Julien.
Dance performances have long had a dedicated neighbouring rights tariff in the Re:Sound suite of tariffs. The situation is much different with copyright tariffs. SOCAN did not introduce a dedicated tariff and rather decided to make dance performances fit within one of their existing tariffs. After years of negotiations between CAPACOA and SOCAN, we’ve arrived at an inflection point: should we continue to license dance performances under Tarif 8 (Receptions, Conventions, Assemblies and Fashion Shows) or should we rather license them under Tarif 11.A (Circuses, Ice Shows, Fireworks Displays, Sound and Light Shows)?
This town hall will be an opportunity for music users – presenters and dance companies – to consider the pros and cons of each option and to cast their vote on the preferred outcome.
