Action at a Distance Dance Society is based on the west coast of Canada on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. Artistic Director Vanessa Goodman leads the company by focusing on art that has a weight and meaning beyond the purely aesthetic, using choreography as an opportunity to explore the human condition. We believe in creating work of a collaborative nature, often crossing across disciplines. Goodman has received several awards and honours, including The Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award, The Yulanda M. Faris Program, The Chrystal Dance Prize, The Schultz Endowment from Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity; and the “Space to Fail” Program. The company’s work has been presented locally, nationally and internationally. This season the company will be premiering and touring two new works in Canada and the USA, “Core/Us” and “Tuning”; presenting “BLOT” with Simona Deaconsecu and touring “Graveyards and Gardens” with Caroline Shaw in Canada, the USA and Europe.
