Arts in Perspective

Not quite webinars, not quite panel discussions, not quite consultations either, the Arts in Perspective conversations borrow from these different forms of gatherings to create unique online knowledge sharing hangouts. You will learn what’s been going on behind the scenes, you will acquire actionable information, you will get to share your own intelligence and insights, and you will participate in the creation of an environment in which the arts can thrive. Frank, honest and straightforward discussions on complex, but critical topics. A single shared objective: create an environment in which performing arts presentation can thrive.

The topics for this 2018 Arts in Perspective series are still being defined. Please contact us if there is a topic that you would like to discuss.

These free online conversations are for everyone: presenters, agents, artists, funders, and other arts entusiasts.

Upcoming conversations

More Arts in Perspective conversations will soon be announced for the spring and early summer.

Digital Innovation in Arts Presentation

Date: Monday, March 13, 2017
Time: 13:00-14:00 (EDT)
Host: Inga Petri, Strategic Moves; Frédéric Julien, CAPACOA
Description: Digital innovation in the performing arts has seen many experiments using digital and digitized works to reach and build audiences and business models online.

What is the future of live theatre, dance and other performing arts as digital technologies and data networks’ capacities continue to advance? What might be the effects on the live performing arts shows? What can we learn now from the shifts in the music industry business model during the last two decades, or publishing, newspapers, travel agents, taxi companies?

CAPACOA and Strategic Moves have set out to explore these questions in-depth through the Digital Innovation Council for the Performing Arts.

In anticipation of the Arts in a Digital World Summit and of the release of a report by the Digital Innovation Council, this conversation will be an opportunity to discuss early research findings and to shape new ideas for digital innovation in performing arts presentation.

This research project is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

A Night Out: Is the cinema competition for the performing arts?

Time: 13:00-14:00 (EDT)
Hosts: Julie Fossitt, City of Kingston; Frédéric Julien, CAPACOA
Guests: Bryan Smale, Canadian Index of Wellbeing (at the University of Waterloo)
Description: We’re all feeling the crunch on our busy schedule and our wallet; so are Canadian audiences. In fact, time spent by Canadians engaging in arts and culture activities dropped every year from 1994 to 2005. How can the arts sector find a way (or new ways) into Canadian’s busy schedules, and possibly revert that worrisome trend? Let’s take the time to explore the most recent statistics on Canadians’ time use and spending, and consider implications for policy, funding and programming in the arts.

What’s Your Digital Project?

Date: Wednesday, July 12, 2017
Time: 13:00-14:30 (EDT)
Host: Frédéric Julien, CAPACOA
Guests: You
Description: Fact: The arts sector needs to catch up with the digital revolution.

Opportunity: The Canada Council will invest $88.5 million in a new Digital Fund as of this fall. This Fund will be looking for initiatives that demonstrate openness, in the sense that they integrate consensus, collaboration and networking – right from the design phase.

Proposal: Let us be open. Let us meet and share our wildest ideas for a digital future for the arts. Let us find alignment between these ideas and design larger, more collaborative, and more potent projects.

Format: Depending on the number of participants, we will do a series of short pitch presentations, and then discussion (in plenary or in small groups) will follow.

Understanding the New Re:Sound Tariffs

Date: Tuesday, January 23, 2018
Time: 13:00-14:00 (EDT)
Host: Frédéric Julien, CAPACOA
Guests: Martin Gangnier, Re:Sound
Description: In September 2017, the Copyright Board certified several new live performance tariffs. This new suite of tariffs may feel like an added layer of complexity for multi-disciplinary presenters, but it certainly doesn’t need to be so. Together with Re:Sound’s Director of Licensing, we’ll examine how the new tarifs can in fact make your life easier, and we’ll answer all your questions.
